A Day In the Life

The Subterranean SALA Exhibition merges European fairy tales with the local environment, causing the surrounds to warp and change.  Some of the murals feature the same characters.  Here is a day in the life of the Seven Dwarfs, while Snow White is left alone with her wicked step-mother…  accompanying electronic sound pieces by chalkwhitehands include A Quality of Strangeness and Dark Significance.

The Dwarfs begin their day at Patritti Wines and Cellar Door, buying supplies for lunch.  They continue to the Oaklands Park Railway Station, to catch a train to the southern suburbs.

The Seven Dwarfs walk past the old flying fox on Perry Barr Road, that carted rocks to the old Portland Cement Works/Adelaide Brighton Cement from the Reynella Quarry.  Rows of concrete footings are all that remain.  Flying Fox image courtesy of the State Library of South Australia: http://images.slsa.sa.gov.au/mpcimg/60250/B60068.htm

The Seven Dwarfs then walk to work at the Worthing Mine.  The Worthing Mine ruins are on private property but can be viewed from Brooklyn Drive at Hallett Cove.

Thanks to the Marion Historical Society and Marion Heritage Research Centre for their kind assistance.   Map of mural locations here.

14 up and 1 to go!

After five days of beautiful weather, following the week of rain and wind, we’ve managed to install another 8 murals for the 2014 SALA Festival exhibition, so 14 in total now out of the 15!  I’ve discovered sun is also the enemy of wheatpaste, as it dries out the wall and mural before it sticks.  Wheatpasters do it at night, preferably with a full moon.

Follow street artist Žilda as he displays his beautiful artworks around Naples.  Žilda is a self-taught artist who draws on history, literature, mythology and a sense of place for inspiration.  His techniques include  stencils, drawing, graphics, engraving, printmaking and painting.

While it is fascinating to see the process of how Žilda creates and displays his sympathetic work, I also loved experiencing the streets of Naples in this short documentary. Continue reading Žilda in Naples
