Vivienne Westwood (V & A Publications)
This beautiful book was written by Clare Wilcox, curator of the highly successful, international travelling Vivienne Westwood V & A exhibition. Published in 2004, it documents 33 years of Westwood’s evolution to (who I think is) the most influential contemporary fashion designer in the world. With large colour photographs grouped in the order of each major collection and insightful commentary including a Forward, art direction and quotes throughout by Westwood, this is a must have for any dedicated fashionista. I’d love to see a follow up for the next 10 years.
The newly released PLEATS PLEASE by Issey Miyake is on the top of my Christmas books wish list, if I can wait that long!
According to the official Issey Miyake website:
“I want to make clothes that are as universal as t-shirts and jeans.” – PLEATS PLEASE ISSEY MIYAKE embodies this dream of Issey Miyake’s as a designer. PLEATS PLEASE clothes come in simple shapes in a wide variety of colors and prints. They are light, wrinkle-free, and travel well. They can be machine-washed and do not require ironing. Storing them is as simple as rolling them up. Their functionality and practicality have significantly changed the lifestyles of women all over the world.
Additionally, Miyake developed original material through continuous research and using the latest technology, and established his original pleating technique, by which pleats are applied after the fabric is cut and sewn. This book reflects on the approximately 20 years of history, while introducing newly written articles on the universality, innovativeness, and appeal of the clothes and also includes about 400 images.
100 New Fashion Designers
This is the 2012 mini edition of the original 2008 full sized publication by Hywel Davies. An exciting international collection of new designers with lots of photographs of the clothing, working illustrations and accessories. Each designer is profiled including their background, inspiration and philosophy.
Unfortunately the publication date just missed the Mulleavy sisters (Rodarte), Mary Katrantzou and Marta Marques and Paulo Almeida of MARQUES ‘ ALMEIDA, but there are lots of interesting labels such as Meadham Kirchhoff, Peter Pilotto, early Christopher Raeburn, Manish Arora and more.
