Melbourne Street, North Adelaide

Melbourne Street is located in North Adelaide, a mostly residential area with specialty shops, cafes, pubs and accommodation.  Colonel William Light designed North Adelaide as an extension to the city of Adelaide, so it is also surrounded by parklands.  Many of the buildings are heritage listed so this area is a good representation of mid to late 1800’s South Australian architecture.

As a young fashion design student I can remember visiting The Banana Room, an amazing vintage fashion boutique by the late Sophie Van Rood.  Now closed, several hundred pieces from her collection are in the NIDA Historic Costume Collection and the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney.

Popular cafes along Melbourne Street include Yakitori Takumi Japanese restaurant, Elephant Walk coffee and dessert lounge (evenings only) and Cibo.
